The Clubhotel Riu Karamboa looks like a desert oasis as such, it's completely at one with its surroundings. It sits right on the sandy beach of Praia de Salines, fringed by dunes and the Atlantic. Whichever way you look, all you see are sands stretching to the far horizon.
The architecture is pitched somewhere between Moorish, African and Portuguese. But the intricate turrets, archways and parapets actually belie the hotel's size. It's huge - seriously huge - and set in enormous sandy grounds to match. For all its grandeur though, it's the pool that gets top billing. This vast lagoon is sunk into sweeping terraces topped with sunbeds, thatched parasols and palms. Not to mention part-submerged sunloungers and a swim-up bar. Pulled up alongside is La Dunas restaurant where African cuisine is the order of the day. The a la carte portfolio also takes in Cape Verdian and Asian eateries, too.
The Clubhotel Riu Karamboa enjoys an enviable all year round sunny climate which is on the same latitude as Brazil. Flights depart from Gatwick, Manchester and now Glasgow (Summer 2011).
