Windsurfing
With constant breezes the islands don't disappoint for windsurfing holidays.
The keenest windsurfer can pretty well count on being able to windsurf every day; however the seas and wind dictate that you need a fairly high level of competence and experience.
Due to their position within the winter trade wind belt, the Cape Verde Islands boast near perfect wind conditions from late November to June and so the Island of Sal has been a popular haven for windsurfing holidays for years.
On Sal, the main area for windsurfing is at the southern end of the island in Santa Maria. The bay here has a white sandy beach stretching for approximately 4km with a steep sand entry in parts.
For the more experienced, seeking the rush of some serious wave riding then a visit to Punta Preta, on the rougher west side, is a must. Waves here can reach up to 8ft running onto a stony shore break.
Windsurfing is also available on the island of Boa Vista, why not try out the 4* Royal Decameron, 4*Iberostar Club Boa Vista, 5* Riu Karamboa, 5* Riu Touareg or 3* Parque Das Dunas.
A favourite hotel for the watersport enthusiast is the Sab Sab Sal which is situated at the beach of Santa Maria. There is a surf station directly on the hotels' beach, owned by the professional windsurf champion Josh Angulo.
Kite Surfing
Kite Surfing on the islands of Cape Verde is the ultimate paradise for such enthusiasts.
The local representatives can help you book lessons and courses that you can take part in if you are new to the sport or just to help you hire your equipment.
Once you have the hang of it there will be no stopping you!
You can also stay at the 3* Hotel Central which is in the heart of Santa Maria or if you fancy a bit more luxury check out the 4* Morabeza which sits directly on the beach, the exact beach which hosted the PWA (Professional Windsurfers Association) World Cup in February 2007.
